I’ve been working with Salesforce Marketing Cloud since the ExactTarget days, and email development has always been a big part of the work.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that email development looks simple from the outside.

A design comes in.

Someone converts it into HTML.

The email is sent.

Done.

In reality, anyone who has worked seriously with Salesforce Marketing Cloud knows it isn’t that simple.

A production-ready SFMC email needs to work across devices and email clients, handle customer data, support personalisation, pass QA and fit properly into the campaign or journey it belongs to.

And when campaign volumes increase, email development can quickly become a bottleneck.

This is where I see agencies and marketing teams looking for additional Salesforce Marketing Cloud development capacity.

SFMC Email Development Is More Than HTML

HTML is only one part of the job.

A typical Salesforce Marketing Cloud email may involve:

  • Responsive HTML

  • AMPscript

  • Data Extensions

  • Dynamic content

  • Personalisation

  • Conditional logic

  • Tracking

  • Journey Builder

  • Cross-client testing

  • Mobile optimisation

For example, a simple requirement such as:

“Show different offers based on the customer’s membership level.”

can quickly become a technical requirement involving customer data, AMPscript, conditional logic and fallback handling.

The email has to look right.

But it also has to behave right.

That distinction is important.

The Challenge Agencies Face

I’ve spoken with teams where the creative and strategy capabilities are strong, but the technical SFMC capacity is limited.

The situation usually looks something like this.

The client approves the campaign.

The creative team finishes the design.

The account team wants to launch it quickly.

But the internal SFMC developer is already working on several other campaigns.

Now the campaign is waiting for development.

This is where having an experienced SFMC email development partner can help.

You don’t necessarily need to hire another full-time developer every time campaign volume increases.

Sometimes you simply need additional technical capacity when you need it.

What Should an SFMC Email Developer Handle?

For me, a good SFMC email developer should be comfortable working across both the front-end and Marketing Cloud layers.

That includes:

Responsive HTML Email Development

Emails need to work across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

AMPscript

For dynamic content, personalisation, lookups, conditional logic and customer-specific experiences.

Data Extensions

Understanding how customer data is structured and how that data will be used inside the email.

Dynamic Content

Displaying different content based on customer attributes and segments.

Journey Builder

Building email assets that work correctly within customer journeys.

QA and Testing

Checking rendering, links, personalisation, data and responsive behaviour before deployment.

This combination is what makes Salesforce Marketing Cloud email development different from standard email coding.

AMPscript Makes a Big Difference

One of the reasons I enjoy working with Marketing Cloud is the flexibility AMPscript provides.

A well-built email can use customer data to determine what the recipient sees.

For example:

A loyalty member could receive one message.

A new customer could receive another.

A high-value customer could receive a different offer.

A customer who hasn’t purchased recently could receive a re-engagement message.

The email becomes more than a static piece of HTML.

It becomes a dynamic customer experience.

But this also means the developer needs to understand the underlying data.

Writing AMPscript without understanding the Data Extension behind it can create problems later.

QA Is Where Good Email Development Shows

I’ve seen beautiful emails fail because the development and testing process wasn’t given enough attention.

An email might look perfect in one environment and break somewhere else.

That’s why QA is a critical part of SFMC email development.

Before an email goes live, I would typically want to check:

  • Desktop rendering

  • Mobile rendering

  • Outlook compatibility

  • Gmail and Apple Mail

  • Links

  • Tracking parameters

  • AMPscript

  • Dynamic content

  • Personalisation

  • Missing data

  • Images

  • Fallback content

The last thing you want is to discover a personalisation issue after thousands of customers have received the email.

Speed matters, but QA cannot be sacrificed for speed.

Modular Email Development Can Change the Game

If an organisation or agency sends a high volume of campaigns, I strongly recommend thinking about modular email development.

Instead of building every email from scratch, create reusable components such as:

  • Header

  • Hero section

  • Content blocks

  • Product blocks

  • Promotional sections

  • CTA modules

  • Footer

This makes campaign production much faster.

It also creates consistency.

Once the modules are properly developed and tested, the team can reuse them across campaigns instead of starting from zero every time.

For agencies managing multiple clients, this can be particularly valuable.

When Should You Consider an SFMC Development Partner?

You may not need external support all the time.

But it can make sense when:

  • Campaign volumes suddenly increase

  • Your internal developer is overloaded

  • You have multiple clients using SFMC

  • You need faster campaign turnaround

  • You need AMPscript expertise

  • You are migrating existing email templates

  • You need additional QA capacity

  • You need someone who understands SFMC and email development together

The key is flexibility.

Your partner should be able to work as an extension of your existing team rather than creating another layer of management.

One Thing I’ve Learned About Email Development

After working with Marketing Cloud for many years, I don’t think the best email development team is necessarily the one that writes the most code.

It is the team that understands the requirement, the customer data and the Marketing Cloud environment.

They ask the right questions before development.

They build reusable components where possible.

They test properly.

And they understand that an email isn’t just a design.

It is part of a larger customer journey.

That’s the difference between building an email and building an SFMC email experience.

Need More SFMC Email Development Capacity?

If you’re an Australian agency or marketing team working with Salesforce Marketing Cloud and your current development team is stretched, there may be a simple solution.

You don’t always need another full-time hire.

Sometimes you need an experienced SFMC team that can step in when campaign volumes increase and help you deliver without compromising quality.

That’s the kind of support we provide at Frontial.

If you need Salesforce Marketing Cloud email developers who can work with HTML, AMPscript, Data Extensions, personalisation, Journey Builder and QA, I’d be happy to have a conversation.
